Internationally acclaimed animation filmmaker Varun Mehta recently got to set up his very own first animation workshop in Aligarh city. The workshop was organized by Phatta Talkies also featuring Hollywood trained actor Aayushya Krishnatey in a joint workshop of acting with animation. The event was held on 22nd of November. We decided to have a small chit chat with Varun over the occasion.
Q. First of all congratulations on your first workshop. Briefly describe the experience.
VM : Thank you so much. First of all I would like to thank the entire team of 'Phatta Talkies (Mr Kumar Chandrahas and Mrs Kalplata Chandrahas) for serving me this honour. My workshop was jointly conducted with that of an important acting workshop led by the very talented aspiring actor Aayushya Sharma.
The experience was unbelievably awesome to say the least. I was actually a bit tentative about the outcome of the event because I don't see much of a heat for animation in the city. Several Institutes have been closed and people barely understand what it's about. So I planned an interactive session with the young people instead to draw their attention towards the need and Importance of animation.
I am glad it came out very well. I had an instant connect with most of the youngsters in the crowd and felt their enthusiasm over the lunch breaks when we got to interact personally. It was definitely refreshing to see a bunch of young people driven with a different set of talents and ambitions.
Q. What is the importance of such workshops and how can they make a difference in the long run.
VM : Of course, they are very important. First of all, they are important for informative purpose alone. People need to know what animation really is, what's the scope, what are the possibilities, what can be really explored out of it. Animation is certainly not about the obsession for 3D and CGI. It has a lot of depth and many varieties we are yet to explore.
Q. What exactly you performed in the workshop and how it was perceived?
VM: I realized that I must begin with an interactive session and speak to the audience about my experiences because I was not hoping for much excitement. I had initially planned a frame to frame animation process tutorial to guide the students but I was uncertain about the result and thought It might bore them. Hence I explained my journey and told them how to pursue your passion further. After that a video presentation was followed where my award winning work was showcased.
Q. Despite animation being involved in most of the sectors, it does not get its due in this country. What do you think?
VM : I think it has to do with the 'technique' part. When people talk about animation they only think about the working process involved, most of them. Animation is something which should be made compulsory in all schools and colleges for education purposes because it's almost involved everywhere. In schools, teachers use animation on computers to highlight diagrams. In corporate offices, animation is used for presentations. Animation is used in the entire entertainment industry. After all this, there is a scarcity of jobs, the industry facing losses, independent studios and institutes gets closed. It always has to do with the general interest in audience. Animation is definitely growing each and every passing day. But the potential is still untapped. It has a lot to do with acceptance. We can only hope to experience a difference in few coming years.

The Army and Air Force have been deployed for rescuing stranded citizens in Kancheepuram district, where torrential rains have left residents marooned, even as rain water inundated a large part of suburban Tambaram locality here

There have been no fresh rains in the city on Tuesday.

Personnel from the Madras 4 Regiment of the Indian Army have been pressed into service at Mudichur in Kacheepuram on the request of the district administration even as Air Force has conducted sorties to rescue citizens, Defence officials said.

Surplus water from lakes and tanks at Mudichur entered the suburban Tambaram locality, inundating a large part, they said, adding, personnel from Army and IAF were now assisting the district administration in the rescue efforts

IAF helicopters from the Air Force station at Tambaram carried out six sorties and evacuated 22 persons last night they said, adding, food packets and water were air dropped.

This was evident during a major fire in July, when as many as 20-25 fire tenders had to be called from Navi Mumbai and neighbouring regions, including Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and Dombivli. Over the years, several big industrial set-ups have come up inside MIDC, however, the present fire infrastructure of MIDC remains dependent on services from across Navi Mumbai.
'Lacks facilities'
Officials from the Navi Mumbai fire department told mid-day that they often find it difficult to tackle industrial fire incidents without more active support from the MIDC fire department.

Mumbai: Bollywood actors Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor who were in a relationship some time back, have now moved on and very happy with their respective relationships. Though, they might not be dating each other but both care and still love each other. Nowadays, both are busy with the promotions of their upcoming film ‘Tamasha’. Also, during an interview, both Ranbir and Deepika came up with some likes and dislikes about each other. To tell you, one thing that Ranbir does not like about Dippy is that she is a flirt!
Yes, you hear it right. In an interview to a leading daily, on being questioned as to what Jr Kapoor did not like about Deepika was that she is a flirt. The Casanova said, “That she is a flirt. That she is working too much and should not burn herself out. She should take more holidays and breaks and should reserve herself, which she has started doing now.”
Looks like this flirtatious attitude of Dippy did not go well with Ranbir as the first thought that came to his mind at the time of the interview was this!
On the other hand, when Dippy was questioned as to what she disliked about Ranbir, she said, “The fact that you can’t pin point what he is feeling or thinking all the time. At least that was my experience at the time when we were together. I couldn’t really figure him out completely. I am not saying that he is not an emotional person or sensitive person. He must be but it doesn’t come out and it’s not visible. I wish he expressed more.”
Well, who knows may be these differences forced them to part ways! Whatever might be, they have moved on and are more confident and very ambitious now as an individual!

A sense of unease is palpable in the cluster of lanes and around houses in Worli village. The village is nestled at one end of Worli Sea Face that overlooks the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). A recent Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) notice that seeks to declare 22 plots in Worli Koliwada as a slum has sent shockwaves across the village. - See more at: http://www.mid-day.com/articles/mumbai-why-worli-gaothan-residents-are-hurt-angry-and-feel-insulted/16688176#sthash.KtEuoZls.dpuf

Residents are bristling at the thought of their village which was part of the original city being called a slum. Resident Shashikanth Parkar (73) has records of all the strife these Worli villagers have had with various authorities to save their land. - See more at: http://www.mid-day.com/articles/mumbai-why-worli-gaothan-residents-are-hurt-angry-and-feel-insulted/16688176#sthash.KtEuoZls.dpuf

He says, “The East Indians and Kolis are the majority communities in this village. The area is a gaothan (village site) which comes under the Coastal Regulation Zone III and construction is restricted here. As per the Bombay Improvement Trust of 1933, no one can oust the villagers from the area. This SRA plan is bogus.” - See more at: http://www.mid-day.com/articles/mumbai-why-worli-gaothan-residents-are-hurt-angry-and-feel-insulted/16688176#sthash.KtEuoZls.dpuf

BENGALURU : Up till now, it’s been a ‘Games of Rains’ in M Chinnaswamy Stadium here in the second Test match between India and South Africa as after completion of Day 1, the rain has spoilt two entire days without a ball being bowled.
It is another day in Bengaluru, which is called off without being a single ball bowled. Weather forecast predicted more rainfall.
“Bad news from M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Play for Day 2 has been called off. If weather permits, tomorrow the play will start at 9:15am,” tweeted BCCI.
Before rain, India totally dominated day one of the second Test against South Africa played at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangaluru. After opting to bowl, the magical spinners – R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, took 4 wickets each and restricted Proteas to 214. However, AB de Villiars played his 100th Test in style and commanded his team to a respectable total, with his 85-run innings.
The Indian openers in response got off to a great start. The duo played audacious shots and provided the team, a great start which was missed in the last Test. Murali Vijay (28*) and especially, Shikhar Dhawan (45*) made his mark with his fearless innings. The day ended vehemently for India as opening pair remained unbeaten at 80.
South Africa must be missing its guns, in the form of Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander. Proteas will hope for

seasons and asked the Ministry of Civil Aviation to suggest ways to end this menace. Modi received representations from some Indians residing in the UAE on his visit - the Indians there pointed out that fares are being hiked by airlines during festivals like Onam, making it difficult for them to go home. The PM brought it up at a meeting held with ministry officials.
Modi's concern over high air fares was neither new nor unfounded. There has been a long drawn debate within the ministry about how to control last-minute steep fares on domestic routes. In fact, minister Sharma has pointed out fare regulation is necessary to dissuade airlines from indulging in what he called "predatory pricing". Sharma was referring to domestic concerns whereas Modi picked out the concerns raised by the Indian diaspora abroad on the same issue. Sharma's comments followed complaints from numerous members of parliament about steep last minute fares, specially flights to the north east region.
Sharma had earlier hinted that if airlines did not fall in line, he could ask state-owned Air India to reduce fares on high density routes, forcing private carriers to also lower fares. An earlier fare study conducted by the DGCA had also exonerated airlines since it found that less than 2 percent of all domestic fares were in the highest fare bucket. Last year, the ministry had been mulling a cap on lowest and highest fares an airline can charge on any domestic route but that proposal was shelved after much internal discussion.

When it comes to creating a great work of art, practice makes perfect, writes Matthew Syed.
A design college in the United States has just started a new exhibition about creativity, which will run till January. It is called "Permission to Fail". The curator asked a group of 50 prestigious designers and illustrators to send in their mess-ups, rough drafts and preliminary sketches so that they could be put on display.

Now, this may seem like an odd thing to do. Most exhibitions are all about the finished product, the pristine new car design, perhaps, or the flawless painting. But the college, called Mount Ida in Massachusetts,

sd fdsf sdf sdf sdf dsf dsf dsf dsf dsf dsf dsf dsf dsf ds

wanted its students to engage not with the finished article, but what happened beforehand. They wanted to reach into the true characteristics of how creativity happens.
A quick story. In their book Art and Fear, David Bayles and Ted Orland tell of a ceramics teacher who announced on the opening day of class that he was dividing the students into two groups. Half were told that they would be graded on quantity. On the final day of term, the teacher said he'd come to class with some scales and weigh the pots they had made. They would get an "A" for 50lb of pots, a "B" for 40lb, and so on. The other half would be graded on quality. They just had to bring along their one, pristine, perfectly designed pot.
The results were emphatic - the works of highest quality, the most beautiful and creative designs, were all produced by the group graded for quantity. As Bayles and Orland put it: "It seems that while the 'quantity' group was busily churning out piles of work - and learning from their mistakes - the 'quality' group had sat theorising about perfection,

And in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay."

The platitudinous and clichéd joint statement says all the right things- security and prosperity in an interconnected world, India’s economic development, rise as global power, the homilies to the international system and reference to global threats, among other things. In this sense, Cameron and Modi then have reasons to feel good: they have delivered speeches that are 'forward looking' and imply vision. But the problem is that the statement is too forward looking. World politics and international relations are too fluid to conform and correspond to the vision laid out by both Cameron and Modi. There are other issues of a structural nature with it.

This, insofar as the broad critique of the joint statement is concerned. But, it does mean that the two leaders’ meeting has been fruitless. There are key takeaways for both India and the United Kingdom- the former a nation that seems to be stuck in the ‘emerging power’ appellation and the latter a former colonial power whose role in the world has shrunk considerably and whose foreign policy orientation and approach has been characterized by a 'muddle' since the past decades or so.
So what are the key takeaways?

The thrust of the emerging bilateral relationship and the joint statement appears to lie in a commitment to the international system and order that emerged after the detritus of the Second World War. This international system – a compendium of power and a rule based on whose normative content and thrust was created and crafted by the West- is under threat – albeit a rather diffuse one.

Special package is something the people of AP are looking forward eagerly even as the people are reconciling to the fact that special status may not be an easy one for the people in this state. However there is some interesting news in Delhi circles.

Central government is reportedly all set to announce a Special Package to Andhra Pradesh any time soon. The series of meetings in Delhi are pointing towards this effect. Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi had instructed Niti Aayog’s Vice President, Arvind Panagariya to consider the bifurcation promises that were made to the state.

Venkaiah Naidu and Chandrababu Naidu reportedly met Arvind Panagariya today in Delhi and discussed in detail about the report. He reportedly informed them that this report is all ready and will be soon submitted to the Prime Minister for his approval.

Hyundai India has added CNG variants to its Grand i10 hatchback and the Xcent which is a compact sedan. The customer has to pay Rs 65,000 extra for these kits in addition to the on-road price of the petrol trim that you choose to spec.  The CNG-equipped cars get a Dual ECU Dynamic Sequential Technology (DEDST) CNG kit with separate injectors. These injectors, according to the company send optimum gas flow to the engine helping maintain adequate power and offering decent performance at all the time. The DEDST CNG kit fitted models will be covered under company’s two year unlimited kilometres warranty.

Expect a minimal drop in the performance of the 1.2-litre Kappa 2 petrol engine when equipped with this CNG kit. Currently, in the Grand i10 and Xcent, the engine makes 83PS of power and 114Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual. Note that the automatic trims don’t get the option of CNG. The Hyundai Grand i10 already had a LPG variant in its portfolio but due to lack of demand, it has now been discontinued.
Hyundai is also providing discount schemes on the Grand i10 and Xcent range this Diwali. It starts with Rs 40,000 and goes up to Rs 51,000 for both the cars.

  1. And that’s where the Audi S5 Sportback comes in. It’s not too large, has four seats to keep your beloved happy, it’s comfortable and easy to drive,
  2. It looks pretty darn good and most importantly, it has that sweet-sounding 3.0-litre V6 that doesn’t fail to entertain.
  3.  In essence, it is the metaphorical bridge over troubled waters. Let me elaborate.

The S5 Sportback gets 333PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that puts out 440Nm of torque. Audi claims a 0-100kmph time of 5.1 seconds, which feels quick, but not snaps-your-neck kind of quick. The torque kicks in at close to 3,000rpm and from there, it’s a quick few seconds up the rev-counter to hit 6,000rpm where the engine redlines. The speedometer, meanwhile, makes a steady climb to 150kmph before you realise how fast you’re going thanks to the slick 7-speed S tronic transmission.
Like all the other Volkswagen dual-clutch transmissions, this one is swift and precise. It also gets Audi’s Drive Select with four modes —

Efficiency, Comfort, Dynamic and Individual. In Efficiency and Comfort modes, the transmission relaxes a bit (doesn’t get lazy though) while the exhaust quietens down.

Turn the knob to select Dynamic mode, and the car wakes up immediately as the gear-shifts are served up later.

The throttle sensitivity increases and the exhaust opens up fully to give a sharp bellow that instantly puts a smile on your face.

For best results, switch to manual and use paddle-shifters.

The car now gets larger discs that feel sharp and do a pretty good job of bringing the car to a standstill from three digit speeds. To improve efficiency, !@#$%^&*()_+-={}[];'\<>?,./ the S5 has been fitted with a brake energy recovery system that stores the kinetic energy for use by the alternator.

She is wrapping up Memu , a thriller where she plays the lead protagonist. “I feel I’ve been in the industry long enough to rally a film around myself. Something like Arundhati has eased my nerves about that. Had I been offered such films early in my career, I would have given it a second thought,” Trisha adds. At a time when she’s getting to work with actors and directors, like Siddharth, Kamal Haasan, Ganesh Venkatraman, Ajith and Gautham Menon the second time around, the comfort level on the sets has taken a big leap, she reveals. “In a long career, this is bound to happen. The easy aspect is that you know each of their working styles and can adapt accordingly.”
Talking about Yennai Arindhaal, where she shed stereotypes by playing a divorcee, a mother and stepping into a relationship with an unmarried cop, she shares, “I turned down the film, for it was also a two-heroine project with my role being shorter. Over time though, the Gautham Menon factor convinced me enough on the portrayal. It’s only after a part like Hemanika that people realised I could come close to a certain Jessie ( Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya ). Looking back, I feel it would have been the biggest regret of my career, hadn’t I taken up the role,” she confesses.
  1.  Has the way she’s handled success and failure changed over the years? “In my early days, probably, failure didn’t matter.
  2.  Even the choices I took weren’t those templated ones. But now, it affects me inside. Before coming to the industry too, I knew how to handle my highs and lows.
  3. Regarding success though, I try to relish it supremely,” Trisha says. Given her following in both Tamil and Telugu, it’s timely that the actress has opened up to more bilinguals, helping her reduce the time-gap between each of her films in the industries.
  4. She feels there are advantages and disadvantages. “Positively, you get to do two films at once. On the flipside, it’s tedious to do the same shot yet again,” the actress opines.

Has she noticed any differences in Kamal Haasan from the time of Manmadha n Ambu toThoongavanam ? “His method, the way he conducts rehearsals, has remained the same. It’s perfect homework {script} when you know not only about your role in the movie, but are also provided with a wholesome view of the film and its atmosphere.
  • It’s more special for me this time, as I have a unique action block with him.
  •  It was a good change to take on a hero,” she laughs. The film,
  •  releasing for Deepavali, she adds, is an intelligent thriller, apt for today’s audience.

“The extremism and religious intolerance that was on the rise after Narendra Modi came to power in India received a setback as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a thumping defeat in the Bihar state assembly elections, The News International, reported under the front-page headline ’Modi’s BJP bites the dust in Bihar for its extremism’
It said that Mr. Modi had turned the Bihar poll into a test of his popularity, addressing dozens of rallies and promising voters billions of dollars for development in a poor state where two-thirds of the population does not have access to even electricity.
There’s a lot being written about her personal life, with her engagement being called off, and talk of relationships with co-stars. She is not worried. “In each of the cases, only I know what and why those things happened. There are presumptions when you don’t know the truth. If similar things were written about my contemporaries, maybe I’d have trusted them. It’s really alright,” Trisha signs off.
